That precious good
called water
The following interview with the managing director of Scarabelli Irrigazione - published in 2000 by ACER magazine – clearly delineates the current projects and prospects of our company.

“His love for water and the awareness of its vital importance have always been at the core of Gian Carlo Scarabelli´s philosophy. Since 1977 his company has strongly believed in the use of automatic irrigation systems. In fact, such systems have later on proved to be fundamental in order to reduce the waste of water, time and labour to the minimum, in both ornamental green and agriculture.”

Gian Carlo Scarabelli - administrator and founder of Scarabelli Irrigazione – explains to ACER the importance of a correct use of water, a precious good.

ACER: 6-09-2007
Gian Carlo Scarabelli (G.C.S.): after eight years of experience in the field of irrigation, working with different companies, in 1997 I decided to found Scarabelli, a company specialized in underground pumps, water systems and agricultural irrigation. On the same year we started working in the gardening sector as well, realizing that it represented a good chance to work in a more specialized way. We started with installing automatic irrigation systems for public bodies, and then extended our business to golf courses, football pitches, large villas, blocks of flats, etc. Back at the time offering automatic irrigation and watering systems was a forefront attempt, and explaining to people that the system was after all quite simple and very functional wasn´t easy. We had no examples to show of other existing facilities because there weren´t any yet.

ACER: What made you want to start your business in the irrigation industry?
G.C.S.: At the core of my work there is passion, thus our slogan “water, a precious good”. I had sensed what importance water could have already back in the 70s, and have always committed to find methods for saving and using it best. I have always believed in water, because in its absence there is no life. Water is necessary for everything we do, we could not live without it. Despite such an obvious thing water has always been misused and wasted in the past. In fact, a regulation on how to use water came out only last year. Water conservation means economic savings. Incredibly the first micro irrigation device used 30/40 liters per hour; nowadays the standard is only 3 liters per hour.

ACER: After being close to abandoning the agriculture sector you made the decision to stay. Why?
G.C.S.: At the beginning in agriculture there was no way to express ourselves in terms of technology. Afterwards - also thanks to fertirrigation – the new generations of agriculturists have had to adapt to the recent technologies. Using at best your fertilizer was and still is extremely important since it is even more expensive than the water. However, today we approach agriculture in a different way.

ACER: In what way?
G.C.S: Scarabelli´s agronomists don´t simply offer an irrigation system; they offer a way to obtain a higher production at a lower cost.

ACER: Who are currently your main clients?
G.C.S: With regards to gardening our main clients are public bodies, farms and nurseries, architectures and technical offices for jobs of a certain prestige, golf courses and many football pitches. For the latter we use innovative burial techniques, which allow us to build an irrigation system without the need for digging so that the playground remains usable. For instance, we have built the irrigation system for Bologna´s stadium during the Italy Cup, for the Albarella Golf course (Rosolina-Rovigo) and Casalunga Golf course (Castenaso-Bologna) and others without ever interrupting the games. As regards agriculture we work with big cooperatives which have many associated farmers.

ACER: Where do you work mainly?
G.C.S.: We mainly work in Emilia Romagna, The Marche, Veneto, Lombardy, Tuscany and Liguria. For several big projects we work all over Italy and sometimes abroad.

ACER: How is the sales network structured?
G.C.S.: We have only direct officers and don´t work with agents. This is because we sell technology over time and not in the immediate. We are about twenty people with two technical offices: one for agriculture - which is coordinated by two people - and one for gardening, managed by three people.

ACER: What do you offer beyond the product?
G.C.S.: First of all, the design and the advice, either over the phone or in the field. Secondly, the assistance, a thing we consider as fundamental. There are two people responsible for the customer assistance. In the busiest periods the number of technicians which deal with it is doubled.
